ProtonVPN was created by the same team that developed ProtonMail — the world's largest encrypted email service. The core team met at CERN and founded Proton Technologies AG in Geneva, Switzerland over a decade ago, driven by a belief that internet privacy is a fundamental human right.

Our mission is to provide trustworthy privacy tools accessible to everyone, regardless of where they live or what risks they face. That's why we offer a genuinely free VPN tier — because privacy shouldn't be a privilege available only to those who can pay for it.

ProtonVPN is headquartered in Switzerland and operates under Swiss privacy law, which is among the strongest in the world. Switzerland is not a member of any international surveillance alliance (Five Eyes, Nine Eyes, or Fourteen Eyes), providing an additional legal shield for our users.

All ProtonVPN client apps are fully open source and available for review on GitHub. We commission regular independent security audits from firms like Securitum and publish the results publicly, so our security claims can be verified by anyone. We believe that trust must be earned through transparency, not just claimed.
